What I'm Reading: What My Bones Know, A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma
Welcome to the reading corner of the Bloom Within blog.
Reading has always been one of my favorite ways to learn, reflect, and see things from a different perspective. In this space, I'll be sharing books I've read, what stood out to me, and some of my thoughts along the way. I hope this can be a space for curiosity, reflection, and exploring the many layers of being human.
I recently finished What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from Complex Trauma by Stephanie Foo, and I really enjoyed it.
It is definitely a deep and emotional memoir. Because it explores experiences of abuse and trauma, some parts may be difficult for some readers. What I appreciated most was how honestly Stephanie wrote about her experiences and the ways Complex PTSD (C-PTSD) showed up throughout her life. Through her story, she illustrates how trauma doesn't simply end when the experience is over. It can continue to influence and impact relationships, self-worth, emotions, and the way a person experiences the world around them. The book also acknowledges the ups and downs of healing, the coping strategies people develop to survive, and the reality that healing is rarely linear.
I also highly recommend the audiobook. As a therapist, I really enjoyed listening to the recorded therapy sessions. They added another layer to the story and helped bring Stephanie's healing journey to life. I found myself reflecting on the importance of the therapeutic relationship throughout the book and the role that safety, trust, and connection can play in the healing process.
